WordPress and Compressing Images for SEO and speed benefits

If you run your website on the popular WordPress content management system, then you need to ensure that you are managing your images well to give your site visitors the best possible experience when they arrive.

Image compression is an often overlooked but important factor in website loading speed, and also a consideration in how your site is rated by the likes of Google and Bing etc. One of the main causes of low scores during website testing is unoptimised images.

Manually processing each image before you upload it is not only time consuming, but can also be a hit and miss affair unless you are proficient at image handling, this is where WordPress plugins come into action.

There are plenty of plugins available that you can install on your site to assist with image compression, the best known being EWWW Image Optimizer, WP Smush, Kraken Image Optimizer and Optimus, all of which return slightly different results in getting the balance of compression and visual appearance correct, some better than others.

Very recently a new kid on the block arrived, Imagify Image Optimiser – https://imagify.io/ provided by the talented team who develop and sell the excellent WP Rocket plugin that makes WordPress run super-fast, they know a lot about compression, and this plugin reflects that.

Imagify offer a range of price plans to suit all businesses, but the best part of the deal is that they also offer a free account which allows you to process 25 Mb of images every month without charge, plus an extra 25Mb for registering, for most companies that’s more than adequate to fulfil your needs.

We ran some tests on our own website and have been mightily impressed by the results, so much so that Imagify has become a fixture on our site and we’re installing it on our client’s sites as well.

We were pleased to see that Imagify backs up every image before setting to work (we checked this manually via FTP) – so in the highly unlikely event that you wanted to restore the original images you can at the click of a button.

If you are interested in trying/using Imagify we’ve provided a walk through to installing and using the plugin.
